Signs of an Engine Problem
Engines usually give warning before a serious failure. Worth having checked promptly:
Warning lights — engine management, oil pressure or temperature
Unusual noises — knocking, rattling, tapping or whining from the engine
Loss of power, poor running or misfiring
Overheating, or the temperature gauge climbing
Oil leaks, or oil appearing where it shouldn't
Excessive or unusual exhaust smoke
Rising oil or coolant consumption
An oil pressure warning light in particular should be treated as urgent - continuing to drive with low oil pressure can destroy an engine quickly. If it comes on, stop and call us.
Engine Repair vs Replacement
When a fault turns out to be a serious internal one, there's a genuine decision to make - repair the engine, fit a reconditioned or replacement engine, or, for an older vehicle, weigh the repair against the vehicle's value. We give you a straight assessment of what's wrong and the realistic options, with the costs, so you can make an informed decision. We won't push the most expensive route, and if a repair isn't economically sensible on a particular vehicle, we'll tell you that too.

My oil pressure warning light has come on - can I keep driving?
No. An oil pressure warning means the engine may not be getting the lubrication it needs, and continuing to drive can cause severe, rapid damage. Stop as soon as it's safe and call us.
What does engine knocking mean?
A knock can range from a minor ancillary or worn component to a serious internal fault, so it needs diagnosing rather than guessing. Have it checked promptly - and if the knock is loud, sudden or accompanied by a warning light or power loss, stop driving and call us.
Can you diagnose an engine fault at my premises?
Yes. We bring diagnostic equipment to your home, depot or workplace and identify the cause on site. Many engine repairs can then be carried out at your premises; for larger jobs we'll advise on what's involved.
Is it worth repairing an engine or replacing it?
It depends on the fault, the vehicle's age and its value. For a serious internal fault, options include repair, a reconditioned engine or a replacement - and on an older vehicle, weighing that against the vehicle's worth. We give you an honest assessment and the costs so you can decide.
Why is my engine using more oil than it used to?
Rising oil consumption can point to leaks, worn seals or internal wear. It's worth diagnosing early, both to fix the cause and because running an engine low on oil risks far more serious damage. We trace where the oil is going and advise on the fix.
